Tipping your hat to someone you pass by can be a very friendly and polite way of saying a silent hello to someone you know.  
 
How to tip your hat at someone:  
 
1. Make sure you are wearing some sort of hat with has a brim or peak.  
 
2. Establish eye contact when you meet someone.  
 
3. Give them a sincere smile, using not just your mouth, but your eyes. It should not seem forced, think happy thoughts.  
 
4. Politely grab the tip of your hat right in front of you with your pointer finger and thumb or your dexterous hand.  
 
5. Pull the tip of your hat up a little, as if you are moving it up to be able to look at something in the sky, then let it back down.
