Bullying - What are my rights as a parent?
6/26/2010 at 11:24 PM
My daughter and another girl are being bullied at school by a group of girls. On Thursday, after my child stepped in to stand up for the other girl, she was sent a series of threatening(physically) Facebook and text messages. This goes beyond regular teenage girl stuff. What these girls are doing is malicious. The messages were shown to the school counselor and the principal and it was decided that the police would be contacted. The only problem is, the principal was away Friday so it was not dealt with.
The messages have continued both last night and tonight. The principal(who didn't even contact me btw) has said to my child that he didn't suggest I contact all of these girls parents because it may make it worse for my daughter at school. I was okay with that if he had dealt with it yesterday but he didn't. My daughter has deleted and blocked these girls on facebook but unfortunately, she cannot block them on her cell and they just keep messaging her from other fb and cell phone accounts.
I am very tempted, at this point, to call the parents of all of these girls. Would that be inappropriate?
And do I have a right, even though the school year is almost over, to demand that these girls be suspended for the last two days of school? I thought the Brandon School Division had a no bullying policy. It is my understanding that because it is the end of the school year, they will receive no punishment. One of these girls has had previous punishment for the same thing.
