"Our view" Brandon Sun October 15th

Yesterday there was a piece in the Brandon Sun (I think it was the editors notes, or "our view" section) It made note of the Canadian dollar near parity and was 'chest thumping' for readers to try and keep their spending here in the local community and avoid cross-boarder buying, online sales and purchases.
I don't doubt the points they make at all but I can't bring myself to spend more than necessary when I can get something cheaper elsewhere. Basically it looks to me like the Brandon Sun is asking people to donate their 'extra' money to the local economy.
I honestly don't feel any better buying a digital caliper here in Brandon from a local business for $30 when I can buy it online shipped to my door for $8. Why buy my computer parts from local places when I can buy them from
http://www.ncix.com/ (still a Canadian company I may add) for up to 50% off local prices.
I'd just like to start a discussion around this topic to gain more understanding as to why people incite local spending regardless of price differences. Is it really supposed to make me feel good gifting my money away to businesses that can't compete?
