passing away etiquette

I really did not want to post this because I did not want readers to start guessing or making references as to who I am talking about
However I do need help , I am not of this culture , as in I am not from Brandon , or Manitoba , I am not even that Canadian ( came here at age 20 ) so
Here is the question
I have a friend that lost a family member a year ago , I feel the need to say or do something … what do I do
One more thing , I think I am a friend , not sure my friend sees me that way
In any event what do you Canadians / Manitobans / Brandon people do on a year anniversary of a death
