Religion has a place in schools.
But as a part of education rather than indoctrination. The varied religions and belief systems are a part of the multicultural society we live in. Knowledge about those cultures can help us to understand each other and see our own actions from another's point of view.
Information should be provided on many cultures/belief systems without judgement. None should be emphasized and beliefs should be introduced as "Some people believe...". The teacher's personal beliefs should not be disclosed.
Secondly, belief systems played a large role in the founding principles and development of our government. Religion used to play a large role in society, and even now is influential. Understanding the historical significance of those beliefs can help us understand where we come from and why certain decisions were made. This doesn't mean that things cannot change going forward, but context can be very important.
Thirdly, I don't believe that there is a TRUE meaning of any cultural celebration. We all come to those celebrations from our own point of view with our own biases. I think that it's important for people to be able to recognize that not everyone believes the same thing or celebrates the same way.
