The high cost of dying
3/17/2008 at 2:51 PM
Has often caused rancour, and is seldom addressed. Most funeral costs are exorbitant and take advantage of the grief of those left behind. Value for money is part of the issue: but so also is the unfair manipulation of your situation. I have seen news documentaries that show the shoddy workmanship, cheap materials and overpriced services that are rampant in the “industry”. How many times have you seen a commercial encouraging us to provide for our own funeral expenses so our loved ones aren’t saddled with the cost, like a guaranteed funeral insurance package or “how be we float you a loan”! If you don’t provide the very best send off for your loved one you are somehow showing disrespect. Everyone one who speaks on behalf of the funeral companies appear to be so solicitous and compassionate, kind of like the payday loan companies that are there to look after you in your hour of need . The one commercial that really infuriates me is the one where discussion is regarding the service, hymns and music, eulogies, flowers , casket and ride to the cemetery, the lovely final farewell to your dearly loved. The commercial winds up with “ and how will you be paying for this”. I understand there are costs to the burying but should it really be an opportunity for corporations to “get rich.”
