I'm moving into a new house and where I prefer the bed to be there is a floor vent for central air. What I'm wondering is if it is ok to put a bed over a vent? It's on a frame so it's not directly on top, would it work if i closed off the vent?

If it's not directly on top of it sealing it off, all it will mean is that your air flow will be a bit restricted, as it will have to travel out from under the bed. It's really not that big of a deal. We have a dresser that is over top of a vent, but it has legs on it, so it just means that the air does not go straight up, but out from under the dresser. I think a lot of people run in to this problem, especially if the room is small. Not a lot of options for furniture placement sometimes.

You will be ok. Like the first responder said. You can get the deflector to help. That or you bed will be nice and cool in the summer and warmer in the winter with the air going strait up into the bed

Is the floor vent in question directly below a window...  
 
If it is its best not to cover it. Air flow from the vent helps eliminate the condensation that can occur when the temps inside and outside differ. Ei: warm house vs cold mb winter. If you walk around the house you will notice a vent under most of the windows.....I have a new house and there is a vent under every window and by each exterior door.  
 
If there is no window then yes you are safe as long as the piece of furniture is raised. A plastic deflector does help direct the air flow otherwise it is just restricted as above posters have mentioned.

This has never occurred to me. Our bed has been over the vent for 20 years. It's never been a problem. I have the bed pulled out from the wall a bit to allow for airflow. We have no other choice but to have the bed in the direction it's in.

It actually has nothing to do with condensation. The reason the registers are under windows and by doors is cause that is the coldest part of the room. So when the hot air from the furnace mixes with the cold from window and door its comfortable. If it was in the middle of the room it would leave a cold space by the window. To battle condensation and moisture buildup you would use an HRV
