Back when the Canadian dollar was doing much better, I ordered a couple of items on sale from the USA. The total was supposed to be about $110 with free shipping. I was emailed by the vendor and told the free shipping offer was for the US only, but the weight was under 5 lbs., did I still want to place the order? I said, "Sure" and when it arrived, there was a $60+ "shipping and brokerage" fee.
I asked the driver what would happen if I declined the delivery and was told I'd be charged for the return shipping and end up paying shipping and brokerage twice.It would have cost more to do that than the stuff was sold for, so I paid.
Since then, I've refused to deal with any vendors who will only ship via UPS or other couriers. USPS/Canada Post charges a nominal amount for customs and taxes.
