I've worn glasses since I was a child - in my younger years I wore glasses with plastic frames and every year (at least once per year) the frames would break at the nose piece when coming indoors after being outside in frigid temps. This, of course, was costing my parents a lot of money every winter and I switched to metal frames - have worn metal frames for probably 50 years or more.  
 
I now need a new pres:cription since cataract surgery and am definitely going to buy new frames - actually 2 new frames - time to update the style a bit.  
 
My question is - if I choose plastic frames am I going to have the same breakage problems I had as a child? If you wear plastic frames have you had breakage problems?

I've had plastic frames for 10 yrs now, several different styles as well. Never had a single one break! Even "cheap ones" from Zenni

I have worn plastic frames for the past few years and wear them outside in cold temperatures and have never had a problem. I am no expert but I assume that as a child you probably were a bit harder on your frames than you would be as an adult. I still have my original pair and wear them for painting and odd jobs and have never even had to have them straightened.

Plastic glasses can break down due to chemical exposure. I know of a sun glass seller on eBay who was having a problem with returns due to breakage. Suntan lotion causes the plastic to break down.

I have worn plastic for at least 10 years, my kids usually pick plastic as well. I have never had a problem. Kids rarely. We do get them from a place that offers a warranty though.

My daughter has been wearing glasses for 3 years, this winter is the first time her glasses broke from the cold.

years of wearing glasses I have never had plastic frames break from cold weather. I've had them break from an accident-getting hit in the face by a horse for instance-but I find the newer frames with the spring loaded arms are much less prone to breaking. Plastic frames do get brittle with time - I get 2 to 4 years out of mine then I do not count on them any more, time for new ones.
