I have been tossing this idea around for awhile and was wondering about some feedback, particularly from people that could see themselves using the service.  
 
On our farm, there are many times when we break down in a busy time of the year, need to go get parts, and it slows us down for over an hour. So it has got me thinking about running a service that picks the parts up in Brandon, and delivering them to the farm/job site. I was thinking of charging $1 per KM, with discounts for say over 175 KM.  
 
My question is would this be reasonable? Is there anyone that could see themselves using this? All feedback is appreciated.

you would need an employee to pick up and deliver? No way you would pick up and deliver yourself.

Don't most companies already do this? Mazer, piston ring etc ? Or do they just go to other stores and shops? If they don't it's a good idea but chgs, area, etc would require employees which means company cars? Or a lot of extra money you'd need to account for.

There is numerous companies that already do that depending where you live. You also need to carry special insurance for business plates and liability insurance also. It's an expensive business to be in.

It is true that Mazers and them will deliver, but the price to have the dealer deliver, in our experience, is extremely expensive. That's why we never have them do it. This is supposed to be a much cheaper alternative.  
 
And yes, my plan is to hire an employee to drive.

The high cost from the dealership reduces the demand so they do actually have someone available to deliver the part when someone needs and is willing to pay for the service.  
 
When your delivery guy is already off delivering a part, your service won't be faster than someone going in to get it themselves. And your perspective clients are already sending in their least valuable, lowest paid workers to pick up the part.  
 
So in summary  
 
1. This service is already available, and as with anything, if you want priority service, you pay for it  
2. There is already a cheaper way it is being done

if a 2-3 hour round trip is what you are expecting, and you will be paying minimum wage, assuming you are already paying for fuel and the vehicle if someone from your farm makes the run - I would think it would be cheaper to just pay minimum wage by the hour than mileage.  
 
Maybe if you had someone willing to sort of be on call for that you could save money. Maybe a few neighbors getting together to share a driver once a day during busy times could find cheaper ways to share the cost and help each other out, but I don't see a business opportunity.

Maybe you could have your delivery car sitting somewhere and you could have a list of on call employees willing to do the run. You could rotate through the on call list.  
An alternative would be to have a list of people willing to do the run with their own vehicle at a preapproved rate of pay. This would cut yourself out of the money but you could enjoy the service and lower rate.
