Do you tip your massage therapist? What if it’s covered through insurance and you cannot tip. Do you then tip out of pocket? If you are seeing a trainee who is not allowed to charge to give massages but can accept tips, what is the appropriate amount to tip on an hour long massage?

I have insurance coverage for 80%, so when I pay the difference by debit/credit, I pay then. Most places will have a tip option built into the machine. If not, than I would tip out of pocket. Although I have insurance, I usually tip 10-15% of what the original cost of the massage would have been. I’m not sure if most people tip their masseuse, but I do as it’s not an easy job and I think they deserve it! Plus, mine Is fantastic so it’s my way of saying thanks!

The student massage therapist? I was thinking $10 would be enough.. but they aren’t being paid at all so a friend suggested $20. I think that seems expensive as a “tip”.

If the massage therapist sets their own prices I won’t tip. They charge what they want to make. If the MT is an employee and makes an hourly wage, then I will. This isn’t always easy to figure out but I know my MT sets her own prices so I pay what she asks for.

Doesn't sound very professional more like something you would do at a rub and tug an image I would think they would want to distance them selves just doesnt seam like a medical service if tipping is expected.

For injuries/insurance or RMT treatments no way seems weird.  
 
For salon/spa/relaxation services 10-15%.
