ebooks?

I realize with the bankruptcy of McNally Robinson that this discussion has possibly taken place. However I am troubled by the 'ebook'? I understand that when digital music became the rage record labels feared lost profits (most have adapted: albeit at lower margins - much lower). How-ever musicians/entertainers returned to the past and found their money in touring. This has been well documented now, that over the last number of years touring is up. Locally (and with that I disappointingly mean Winnipeg), the management and efficiency of the MTS Centre has been a source of increased concerts in the province - though I would argue that with the current management and the old Winnipeg Arena we would still have seen a huge increase the last few years, as bands/artists returned in force to the road to make money.
Now to my point - how does the writer/novelist make money in replacement of selling books at market value? As was noted in the McNally Robinson bankruptcy less than 10 people came out to see Lawrence Hill (Book of Negros) at their Toronto store. That is a well sold and critically acclaimed novel (which of note I have not read). Even if you downloaded Taylor Swifts new album illegally (not that anyone would - that is theft), you would, and many did, pay for tickets to see her perform and spend money buying merchandise.
How does the ebook author make money when their book is downloaded for free. Who shows up at their concerts?
I know that society and the authors will adapt - I just have no clear vision of how: at this moment.
Just curious if this 'wisdom of crowds' that Adam possesses is able to help in my enlightenment?
