I have tried searching with no success for any pictures of the Assiniboine Hospital that was located at 9th and Richmond Avenue on the north west corner. That was where I started my first job right of school, while it consisted no more than used army barracks it was always clean and good care was given by the staff. I would really like to find some pictures of the hospital and especially the arched lit sign over the road when you came in off Queens Avenue. A lot of people will probably wonder what I’m talking about but some of us older people will remember. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

cannot help but interesting to know. Is it right corner of 9th st and richmond ave. You could try google the exact address of the building and look for images or dates of the establishment.  
I tried to google but got nowhere as I do not know the exact name of the building nor the exact address.

It was the old police station that hot knocked down for Rotary Villas.

Was only a small part of the hospital. The police building was the ReHab part of the hospital and by far the newest part of the hospital.

Yes the old hospital did have a black cloud over as most admitted there never did leave. It was a dark old hospital with some single and double rooms along with a number of six bed open rooms with no privacy. But as I said it was kept clean and the staff were good to the poor souls that were patients there of which many had no families, or at least if they did they never got visited often.  
 
I remember the move as well to the Assiniboine where it is located now, that was quite the undertaking.

Actually believe it or not the old police station never got knocked down. It now a portion of Rotary Villas. They just built the building around it and renovated it.

A couple of the old barracks are now located at Richmond and 17th Street East and are owned by Paul’s Hauling.  
 
Not 100% certain but I think the barracks were where Neelin High School is located today. I knew someone who live near them many years ago and often talked about them.

The old Assiniboine Hospital on Richmond avenue, built by the Department of National Defence in 1942, was operated by the Sanitorium Board of Manitoba until it was converted to an extended care facility in 1961. The need for a better facility in close proximity to Brandon General Hospital was recognized and in October, 1971

Great picture in that article, I’m thinking that picture may have been taken on 9th street looking up towards Richmond Avenue, anyway that’s what the old place looked like. I’m sure there must be more pictures around but I sure can’t find them, I even contacted Bill Hillman and he has nothing in his Brandon archive file. Thanks for the article Brenda

I looked through his site too - found nothing.  
 
Adam - I am posting another picture - I found this picture by googling - Brandon Sanatorium, Brandon, Manitoba images. Remove if you have to.  
 
I remember it too, when visiting my aunt and I was only 4 or 5. Was it green on the outside?

Was a beige tone, as someone else said one of the barrack wings is or was out on 17th street east across from Paul’s and still the same colour from back in the day.

We live in the Brandon Hills area. When we purchased our acreage, we were told that our house and garage were originally pods that were moved from the original Assinaboine hospital on Richmond. From the pictures, our buildings are identical to them. The house has undergone lots of renovations but we still have the original hardwood floors. We found original cement/stone tiles that we use in the garage and the front walks.

check the museum in the armoury 11th and vic has a model of most of the camp that the assiniboine descended from.

If you go to the museum at the brandon armouries on 11th and vic they have a scaled model of the barracks.
