On this day Canada’s first postage Stamp was issued.
It was called the Three-penny Beaver, and designed by Sir Sandford Fleming.
The stamp depicts a Beaver in an oval frame.
It was the first official Postage stamp that depicts an animal.
The first stamps were printed on Laid Paper, which did not adhere to paper envelopes very well, and so in 1852 the printers changed to wove paper.
In 1858 stamps began to be perforated.
