June 6th 1858. Smart, James Allen. (1858 – 1942) Mayor of Brandon

Born June 6th 1858 at Brockville. Was of Scottish descent, the eldest Son of Mr. James Smart of Brockville Ontario.
He was Educated at Public School and C.L. Institute at Woodstock, Ontario.
He married Lizzie F. Jones at Prescott June 1883, and they had seven children, five sons and two daughters.
His occupation was a Hardware Merchant. Was alderman for Brandon city council 1882-3. He was elected Mayor of Brandon 1885 to 1886, 1895 to 1896.
He sat on the Western Judicial District Board of Manitoba 1886. He was first elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in 1886 to 1888, and again in 1888 to 1892 as a Liberal representative of Brandon East.
He became the Canadian parliamentary companion in 1887.
He died at Montreal on 3 May 1942, after several years of ill health, and is commemorated by Smart Street in Winnipeg.
