Looking for more history info - 1st nations questions ...

The internet can be absolutely amazing sometimes with what a person can find when researching ... and it can be utterly frustrating too. I am on the exasperating side of it at the moment and I am wondering if there is anyone out there who could send me in the right direction.
The year is 1884 and Dr Charlotte Ross (real person) lives at Whitemouth Manitoba. Along with her local medical career, she does some doctoring in First Nations communities. Sometimes she got there via canoe. I do not have much information on this, but this is the part that I get to “make up” for my novel. I would like to have her travel to Fort Alexander and am wondering what the river is like from Whitemouth travelling north. Also does anyone have ANY information or internet links that would give me an idea what care doctors provided at that time? Dr Ross was an amazing woman who had great compassion and concern for everyone – I have read that she helped bring Smallpox vaccinations to a great many people. My characters of course are fictional but I like to keep the situations as real as possible.
If you have any suggestions or information at all I would be thrilled to hear them

.
Sorry for placing this in "Brandon History" but thought it was the best place.
