May 18, 1866 James Kirkcaldy is born - see previous post, Historical Brandonites: James Kirkaldy for his bio.
May 19 1845 Explorer John Franklin leaves England with his ships the Erebus and the Terror to find the North West Passage. They would become icebound in July of that year, and over a period of three years die off awaiting rescue.
May 17 1882 Winnipeg Fire Dept. formed; W. 0. McRobie is first official Chief.
May 15 1885 Louis Riel surrenders after defeat in the Battle of Batoche to Maj. Gen. Middleton. He was taken to Regina, imprisoned and would eventually be tried for treason.
May 18 1889 - A. G. B. Bannatyne -Winnipeg businessman and politician dies on a return trip to Winnipeg In St. Paul, Minnesota.
May 18 1917, The Conscription Crisis begins as PM Borden announces in Parliament the need to resort to compulsory military service.
May 15 1919- The Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council calls it's members out on a general strike. Over 30,000 workers from 52 unions as well as non-unionized workers walk off the job.
May 17 1919 Citizens' Committee of One Thousand, a group set up by business leaders to counteract the Winnipeg General Strike, is created to provide essential services.

May 15 1950 - Winnipeg called for a large scale evacuation of St. Boniface and Norwood 1950
May 15 1965 - Glen Hnatiuk, Selkirk Manitoba, golfer is born.
May 15 1968 - The Manitoba Planetarium opens
May 16 1970 - Randy Bachman leaves the Guess Who
May 18 1970- American Woman spends a third consecutive week atop the Billboard charts.
May 16 1973 - Leo Lewis, the "Lincoln Locomotive", is inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame. He played after 11 seasons (55-65) with the Bombers. In that time he rushed for 8,861 yards, returned kickoffs for 5,444 yards. He made 6 trips to the Grey Cup, winning 4.
