My favourite singer of all time is “Reba”, and my favourite Mayor of all time is “Dave”. I dedicate my favourite song of all time to him, “You Lie, you don’t want to hurt me”.
He has promised to revitalize down town Brandon, and promoted the Renaissance Centre. He has promoted tourism for Brandon and area.
He has given his full support to getting Brandon its own General Museum.
He has promised to leave a legacy to remember the 125th Anniversary of Brandon.
He said he could not support a $10m Museum, but the asking price for the CPR Station is $295.000, which includes the East Parking Lot.
The Ground Floor area is: lower level 4,990 SF
Main Floor 5,611 SF
2nd. Floor 4,041 SF
Total 14,642 SF
The GMAC report states that it will cost $320 per square foot to renovate which comes to a cost of $4,685,440.
Mayor Dave is saying that this building will cost the City $10 million, where did he get these figures. The Committee has always said the major cost of this project will be funded from other Government Grants, Corporate Donations and Public Sponsorship.
We cannot create a business plan and architectural drawings until we have purchased a suitable building.
At the Council meeting of December 3rd. Mayor Dave and all of the City Council accepted the following recommendations from the GMAC:
1) That the Mandate of the GMAC be extended to December 1, 2008:
2) That the mission statement for the GMAC be approved as follows:
The Brandon Museum and Archives mission is to collect, conserve, study,
Exhibit and interpret historic and heritage materials relating to the City of Brandon and its place within the history of South-western Manitoba.
3) That the present members of the GMAC have their terms extended until an alternative governing body is established to assume responsibility for the management of the museum/archives:
4) That the GMAC be allocated $50,000 in the 2008 budget so that it can proceed with its mandate in 2008 (this request was already on the agenda for the December 12th. 2007 budget deliberations and was defeated by 6 to 5, presumably Mayor Dave was the deciding vote).
5) That the City Manager be authorized to work with the GMAC to develop a business plan for a museum/archives project in the down town area that can be used in negotiations with senior levels of government, foundations, corporations, and other potential donors of funds or resources in kind for the constriction and/or operation of a museum/archives:
6) That a feasibility study be carried out early in the New Year (2008) to determine if the C.P.R. Station would be a suitable building for a museum/archives in the down town area:
7) That, should the feasibility study confirm the suitability of the C.P.R. Station as a home for a museum/archives, the City negotiate with the C.P.R. to acquire the building and adjacent properties.
Why, in June were the 12 members and three councillors given this mandate and ordered to have an interim report by December with the full knowledge that they would have to spend many hours of study and discussion to have such an extensive report and recommendations just to be told that it is too expensive. The price has not gone up since June, it was $320.00 per square foot then and it is still the same today.
Many people in Brandon have supported this project for Brandon 125 Anniversary, 2500 people signed a request for a GM at the Retired Teachers museum in the Gallery this past summer, and was presented to City Council and ignored, we held a Town Hall discussion night when forty or fifty people turned out to give their opinions and suggestions for what they wanted to see in a new museum, these people have been ignored.
Please if you have been ignored or you wanted to see a General Museum/Archives established in down town Brandon to celebrate Brandon 125 years of history tell Mayor Dave at: mayor@brandon.ca
Song Lyrics.
You sit in your chair: we know you’re awake
The only sounds are those the councillors make
But oh how we long for the truth in your voice
Wishing your promises of money and such
Would not by your estimate cost us too much?
Our demands are so great, we leave you no choice.
Chorus:
You lie you don’t want to hurt us
So you lie, buy a little time, and we go along
What else can we do, maybe its wrong
But you know how much we trust you
So you lie til you can find a way to make it right
You lie
How long until you just can’t go on
And the urge to break loose is just too strong
You should let go thats what you want to do
Oh but you dont know, you don’t know
If its the right thing to do
Chorus:
You lie you don’t want to hurt us
So you lie, buy a little time, and we go along
What else can we do, maybe its wrong
But you know how much we trust you
So you lie til you can find a way to make it right
You lie
