Guest speaker: Dr. Alison Marshall
Dr. Alison Marshall is an associate professor in the Religion Department at Brandon University, on sabbatical from July 2007 to June 2008 working on a book manuscript titled "Remembering the Laundrymen: the history and religion of prairie Chinese settlers." My research probes the different ways that people “do” religion as principal investigator of the SSHRC funded Virtual Ritual Theatre of Lingji performance (experienced at
http://lingji.brandonu.ca) and in the Labyrinth of Peace Project completed in 2002. Most recently, my work has ventured into the terrain of religion and migration, exploring beliefs and practices in Canadian Chinese rural prairie communities, and the importance of event hosting and the “doing” of food. A Chinese religion specialist, I teach courses examining Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, mediumship and religious experience.
She will be speaking on her new book "Remembering the Laundrymen: the history and religion of prairie Chinese settlers."
