My Coffee Group remembers a small pipe coming out of basement wall in their early 1900s houses they bought them in 1970s. They think it was an early type of gas pipe but I thought it was an heater oil filler pipe. Group thought pipe was too narrow and on wrong side of house for oil. Any ideas ?

I used to rent a house with a heating oil tank outside. The oil entered the cellar and went to the furnace through a fairly small steel pipe (likely 3/4" I.D.). The outside tank was filled by the delivery truck through a larger (approx. 2") pipe.  
I think old outdoor tanks may have been grandfathered until they needed replacing, then new ones had to be interior. my experience was not in Brandon, but I would think the same thing may have been true here.

central brandon had manufactured gas service lines in the early 1900's .wartime houses were built after 1945 and natural gas came in mid to late 1950's . you may be looking at an oil line from outside tank .

it could possibly be a building trap vent they are usually a 2inch 90 sticking out

if its about3 inch OD and has a 90 bend it a sewer vent.put your nose to it and smell,

I lived in a really old house and it even had a huge fuel tank in the basement the landlord said that they used to pump gas from out side fill the tank than it was filter and put into a really old school furnace not sure exactly what they put in or how it worked but that the same pipe that was comen out

It was probable the fill line or vent line for the fuel tank in the basement

if the spot where pipe comes out of house is in close proximity of main sewer cleanout in basement then it is a sewer vent .could a licenced plumber please shed some light on this topic please,

small diameter 1/2 to 1 inch usually galvanized is what the old oil furnaces used  
 
larger 2 to 3 inch mostly 2 inch cast or galvanized would be a building trap vent for your sewer
