It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since nine-eleven was added to our vocabulary. My hearts go out to families and friends of those whose lives were changed forever. Do you recall where you were when you first heard the news?

I heard on the radio that a plane hit the World Trade Center. But I knew from history that small planes have collided with a few of the tall buildings in NY before. It wasn't till I saw on the tv, it wasn't an accident. Then saw the second plane hit.

Heard the news on the radio and then found a tv to watch the footage. So remember that day.

I was at work. One of my co-workers exclaimed that a plane hit the WTC, but no one thought much of it. When she declared a second had hit, everyone's heads popped out of their cubicles. No one got any work done for the rest of the day. People were scared and wanted to go home. I remember coming home and just watched CNN until I fell asleep.

Was at Brandon University, Flora Cowan residence, went towards my first class in Education (my second degree), saw several people watch TV in a cafe, I glanced too and further heard stories from students, in class and had an assignment from one professor about what happened.

when my wife called from work and told me to turn on the TV - 1st plane had hit the WTC and I was horrified to watch the 2nd plane hit the other WTC - didn't do any painting that day.

I think we were all in shock that day. I know when I went home after work I hugged my family and was so happy to be home with my family.

at Maple Leaf. Many on the lines had so much second hand info saying "THE USA is under ATTACK" and "Planes are crashing into buildings, the world is ending"...and the like.  
 
Never forget.

On vacation in Toronto, was actually supposed to fly back to Winnipeg that day. I went down to get coffee in the hotel lobby, and when I came back up, by husband was flipping channels because all the stations were breaking from regular programming and showing what was happening. We were watching live when the second plane hit.  
Of course nobody knew what was going to happen as far as flights, so we checked out and went to the airport. When we realized that all flights were being halted, we went back to the hotel and checked back in - they had increased the room rate by $100 a night, but what could we do. It was 6 days before we could get a flight back. The hotel was very close to the airport, and I remember seeing all the planes lined up on the tarmacs.

That must have been more than a little bit unnerving. Especially flying back home.

I was sleeping when the second plane hit but the phone rang shortly after.

i was about to walk out the door to go to work when one of my roommates said to check out the news, I got there just in time to see the second plane hit.  
 
My first thought was a little insensitive in hindsight, I can remember thinking along the lines of "you don't see that everyday" then walking out the door and going to work, not realizing the impact it was going to have in the long term.

Was baling silage for my neighbour listening to reports on BBC radio.

I was in the multipurpose room at our school (I was in Grade 7). When the first one hit they got the tv hooked up there. Those of us in there watched the second one hit.

Getting my 1st colonoscopy when I was living in Quebec.. thanks to 9/11.. I'll remember that for the rest of my life!

I was at university in Winnipeg and my professor was actually from NY and had family and friends still living there so she had taken off before class…School got canceled that day and when I got on the bus I realized how bad this was and how bad it was going to get…I remember like it was yesterday watching total strangers crying and hugging each other on a public bus…it was crazy to see everyone’s reaction…didn’t fully hit me until that ride!

I was in Grade 9. One of the teachers set up a TV in our multipurpose room so that we could all watch the news in between our classes. I remember him specifically saying "you're watching history in the making" and he was right. Thanks, Mr. K for the wisdom and insight, and the opportunity for us kids to see events unfold. We didn't know how important it was at the time.

the news spread like wildfire through our workplace office and plant.  
 
any tv was tuned to it and people stopping to watch were not told get back to working.  
 
I also remember when the men walked on the moon.  
 
I also remember where I was when JFK was killed.  
 
Memorial events like this always stay in your mind.

I'm late to this conversation, but here goes anyhow.  
 
I didn't find out until returning to King George in the afternoon (grade 8) after lunch. We were sat down by the gym teacher who went on to explain what happened, and why it mattered. The problem is I hadn't the slightest clue of what the world trade center was. Thus, I spent the rest of the afternoon picturing mountains of broken glass and trying to put a building to the name.  
 
It was only on the walk home that I had an epiphany. For some reason, the episode of the Simpsons wherein Homer visited the World Trade center came to mind, and then I understood the gravity of the situation.  
 
It's interesting since that episode was not re-aired for many years after.
