enough is enough already! The underpass should be filled in and a proper level crossing created. It's not the Trans Canada anymore it's a side road into Brandon. Portage has two main lines at a level crossing at the East side of town and Carberry has a level crossing on Hwy 1. Why has a level crossing not been considered at Kemney. At the very least up the cost of bridge inspection and repair, and cleanup charged directly to the trucking companies and not the taxpayer

A sign? Maybe. Missed a sign and a bunch of flashing lights? Hardly. And certainly not while hauling a load. Inexperienced driver-all the more reason to take notice of lights. I'd fire any driver that used these sorry excuses.

You know nothing about trucking,if you fired every driver that made a mistake you would have nobody to drive your trucks, why do company's want drivers that have years of over the road experience because they already had all their mishaps and accidents and learned how to get a load to its destination, it cant be taught in a class room you learn by doing, this company might have to fire him for insurance reasons, but he just learned something and will get a job as soon as he wants one, or a little dressing down then a pep talk and back on the road a little smarter hopefully.Remember the next semi driver you pass on the highway isnt perfect and makes mistakes so keep your head up.

I know a helluva lot more about trucking than you could possibly imagine. I also have a lot more respect for a good driver than most people do-and I know to watch out for the crappy drivers too, whether they be in the big rigs or the "4 wheelers".

Just leave the bridge, so as not to inconvenience the drivers of cars and light trucks and close Victoria as a truck route. Trucks would then legally have to use Hwy#1 to 18th, 1st or #110 to get into Bdn or go south, until they get a western access/bypass highway built.

25 years over the road experience tells me your talking through you hat!! I don't know it all and your way below that, Trucking is the school of hard knocks any driver that tells you he didn't hit anything or break anything bend anything on the way up is pulling your leg stick to something you know you don't have a clue.

is like anything else there are profesional drivers/operators and steering wheel holders and seat warmers thats all they are. some of these guys that have class ones or even bachhoe construction/ equipment permits shouldn't have, or operate any equipment Youtubes full of them and the mistakes. Yeah I run equipment safly and don't wreck crap by stupid careless mistakes like texting while driving or what ever.  
 
I can drive a semi in the yard do what ever to fix it I just don't have a licence to drive it on the road. Yeah I've driven bigger tandem grain truck's so I'm not totally blind as to driving this stuff on the road under pressure to be somewhere in a hurry at busy times.  
 
Yeah farm kids do hit stuff it's called being distracted or not having experience, just like a semi driver that can't read the signs or speak the language. yes trucks hit it before but it's not been so common as in the last few years that I've known about it.

Time to give up on it fill it in people have been dying crashing and trucks hitting it as long as I've been alive it was a favorite suicide spot till they put the barrels up wind her up and hit it square, more than a few met the end there, all the accidents the railroad even dumped gravel accidentally going over that took out a few windshields I saw that it happened its a disaster area get rid of it and as far as Trucks hitting I still say cell phones #1 suspect.

Would be nice - but he will pay a fine, and that is all. Maybe loose his job, but financially, it will be minimal for the driver.

If A driver wants to admit he screwed up-BIG TIME-thats well and good. If he wants to go to the boss and say he didn't know what the flashing lights mean-thats bad. Sorry, it just is. If you don't know what a flashing yellow light means-you don't deserve a license of any sort.

is when drivers don't pay attention. There are plenty of low bridge signs starting with one near Riverheights Terrace. So there's plenty of warning, plus the over height detectors. Just like in the videos I posted, it all comes down to the drivers responsibility to pay attention to warning signs. If they don't obey them, it's the drivers fault.

It is the fault of the bridge, and the height sign, and the warning lights, the ones that warn you! What can all of that mean?  
 
I have a garage with an automatic door. I wait until the door is all the way up before entering.

like mine:  
drivers fault all the way, the bridge was there long before most of us were born.whether he was new driver, language barrier, distracted by phone , experianced.  
 
in defense of the driver though have you ever really driven and watched those signs, pretend your a first timer through, those signs come up pretty fast and so does the detour heading west.  
 
there are too many signs and they are too small.  
 
there should be a steel beam strung across the highway just before the bridge both sides. Hit the beam not the bridge.  
 
have seen other locations and they actually have stop lights when someone triggers the low height sensor, what would be wrong with that. not like we dont have the technology. you put the stop lights right at the detour on the east and the turn around on the west side.  
 
one of these days the bridge will be so damaged that cp will have to rebuild it and Highways may have to foot part or all of the bill as there are better solutions to protect bridge than what highways dept are doing now.  
 
I like the idea of a level crossing with arms, but how many trains a day. must be a lot.  
 
i like the idea of non truck route, all traffic then goes to north hill and down.

When are we going to get a Western Access Road? In the meantime, banning semis on 1A may be the only real practical solution as just like a fair number of Brandonites, some semi drivers can't read signs or know what lights mean!

Ban semis on 1A?? I don't think so. There are plenty of farmers and other businesses on that stretch of road that need access to it. You can't just ban semis because a few dumb drivers can't follow signs and pay attention to the height of their loads.  
 
It is never going to be filled in. There is never going to be a steel beam or magic steel wall that pops up. No one is on the hook for damages except the companies insurance company. Since the sensors and turn arounds have been added the number of incidents is way down from years past. Unfortunately it's just going to be what it is...

I agree with you. The fine should be much much higher, because there simply is no excuse for ignoring all the signs on either side of the underpass.If they are licensed to drive in Canada, then they should know the road signs and be intelligent enough to know that they should NOT ignore all the signs and flashing lights. Those signs and lights are there for a reason.

I hope whoever designed that bridge is a engineering instructor somewhere now.. Because Job well done..

of the bridge would long dead and buried by now. The bridge was built in the 1930's I'm guessing. Back before semi's of today's size were even thought of. And if the designer was alive today, probably would not of made the underpass.  
 
Though the residents of Kemney would probably welcome a re-route of 1A around the village. Still doesn't excuse a driver from ignoring low bridge signage. It's up to all drivers to watch for signage, especially in unfamiliar locations.

The standard height of an intermodal (sea container) is 2.6m. Then add in the height of the trailer it was on.

I think so. One of these and it will happen, the bridge get damaged to the point that it will be deemed unsafe. I think its time to cut our losses now. The status quo is a loss cause.

on a beam set in frontof the bridge would shear off the top 6 inches of an over height truck, like a can opener. then the trucker does not even stop, he can go on his merry way, hit it fast enough you might not even know youve lost the top 6 inches.
