Giant Asian Wasp?

Just nailed this guy trying to fly into the house. Anyone else seen one in town? Not positive, but sure looks like one. About 1.5 inches long, stinger is 1/4 inch.

Last year I killed 2 in my house. They were HUGE. None this year

I would say it looks like one of these but not certain. I think they are non-stinging but not certain on that either lol.

Save it get it identified
Must be an entomologist in or around Brandon that would be able to identify it.
Maybe at the Natural Resources building but they will be closed tomorrow try Manitoba Agriculture 1129 Queens @ 204-726-6482
I’m sure they would want to know if it is the Asian Wasp.

It’s a wood wasp (aka horntail) We had 2 of them last summer in our yard.

The 2 I killed last year were actual wasps-they looked like super-sized yellow jackets except a bit more pale shade of yellow. I tossed them out and thought later I should have had them checked out. Happily this year I have only found normal sized ones.

If it is a pigeon horntail, you should know that they don't sting or bite and are not aggressive. Their "stinger" looking bit is for laying eggs in trees.
