Banana Peel Fertilizer

I watched a movie last night where it was mentioned that banana peels, thrown into a flower garden, make an excellent fertilizer.
Intrigued, I just *had* to look this up for myself! Being rich in potassium and phosphorus, they're wonderful for many plants, especially roses. I'm going to try this myself; the peels biodegrade very quickly.
Has anyone tried this before?
