what kind of caterpillar?

found the neatest caterpillar when I was outside with the kids walking along the ground toward my step. He was about 4 inches long, green, had about 5 tiny red dots along his sides, looked like a rolled up leaf, complete with a pointy thing on his bum. I have pics, dont know if I can post them straight from this phone or not. What was he? Are they common? He had the cutest little suction cup feet, and so fat and cute!
