Poppy seed paste, any good?

Has anyone bought the poppyseed paste sold in Bdn, and was it good (not stale/rancid smelling). I've tried numerous ways of improving the flavor and smell of whole poppyseeds that are sold in stores and have had no luck. Need poppyseed for kutia I want to make for Xmas.
