I promised to make my grandsons birthday cake but he can't have gluten. Is it possible to buy such mixes in Brandon and if so, where?

Yes, Betty Crocker makes GF cake mixes that are actually pretty good! They should be available at Sobeys, SuperStore, Co Op etc. Either in the gluten-free section (if the store has one), or in with the other cake mixes.

You can substitute almond flour in the place of real flour in most cake recipies.  
It's made from almonds I make most of my baked goods with almond flour.

I totally agree with curlysister. I have to follow a GF diet due to Celiac, and if I am strapped for time and/or don't have GF flour on hand, my preferred brand is Betty Crocker. The rest you can tend to tell there's something different about it, but with Betty Crocker, I find you can't really taste the difference!

Add an extra egg to the cake mix. GF cake mixes tend to be dry.

I have Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity so get really sick from as little as 1 crumb of gluten. I have gotten "glutened" from using pans that had previously been used for normal flour, and stuff like wooden spoons or other utensils can cause a reaction as well. If you have used regular flour in your kitchen in the previous 24 hours it can still be floating in the air and settle on your otherwise clean areas/utensils and cause a reaction. Different people are sensitive at different levels so hopefully he is not as sensitive as I am, but just realize there is more to it than just buying the right product.
