If the negative (black wire) terminal is disconnected, then there will be no spark if your wrench goes from the positive to anything metal, with the exception that if you touch from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of the battery you might have a problem if there is any voltage left in the old battery.
On re-hooking it up, first secure the battery if there is a hold down or a strap, bolt on the red wire to the + terminal, then attach the black wire to the - terminal. You should have no issues.
