I'm hoping someone here with experience in using Lay-Up insurance can help me out. There would be no point switching if it didn't save money but when I called my insurance agent they said that it might cost more if it was for a short term, like a month, but that I might save money if it was on Lay-Up for a longer term like 3 or more months. I didn't learn any more by going to the MPI website. My yearly insurance is roughly $1500 and I was considering taking my car off the road for 3 months. Could anyone help with a rough idea of savings [if any]. Thank you

If you aren't going to be driving your vehicle layup will save you money. Layup will cover theft, fire and vandalism. But no collision, so you cant drive it. Doesnt make sense to put a camper onto layup anymore is what i understood. But a vehicle for more than a month it will save you money.

I have two cars on Lay up right, one costs 200 for the year and the other is 150. Mine are normally on Lay up for 6 months or so, since my autopac registration date is Jan, I think this year I received a $200 credit on the more expensive car which was from sometime in October. I’ve also heard if you have a car that is eligible to be a collector car (older than so many years can’t remember exactly) you can get a lower rate so it makes doing the Lay up not worth it. To say how much you will save I have no idea. I would assume there is differences between daily drivers and pleasure use and the amount you would get back.

We put ours on lay up use one vehicle for winter. We have never been asked for how long we want layup.  
Very easy to do. They will ask you if it is parked on private property.  
Just go in to your insurance place tell them your putting vehicle on lay up. You pay a small amount that covers your layup until your renewal date. You can take it off lay off anytime you just pay premium.  
We saved 300 for Dec payment and will save another 300 for next payment . We put in on layup two weeks before our quarterly payment was due (Nov 15)and we only paid $2.00 as they will credit you any money paid.  
 
Hope this helps but is very easy process. We have used both Guilds or Andrews on Victoria .

Thanks for all the input here. It's very helpful and appreciated. It's difficult to give up the car for 3 months but it looks like it will probably be worthwhile money wise.

Just so you are aware there will be a $15 charge to reduce you coverage to lay-up. And that the vehicle cannot be parked on the street (no collision) and must be parked on private property before you make the switch to lay-up as MPI's system is live and becomes effective immediately.

If your vehicle was parked on your property but another vehicle runs into it, would you get coverage or no?

You would have coverage as yours is parked.

Thanks, that’s good to know as that is the reason why we kept one of our vehicles on pleasure instead. Might be worth changing to save even more $$
