getting a automobile repaired

always price before getting repairs. my friend got three different estimates to repair a power steering hose. here goes.. first estimate - dealership = $385 plus $50 just to look at it
2nd estimate - $180 plus part which he was told needed to be shipped in from the states at a cost of $180 for the part. total $360
3rd estimate..here's the good part.. went in to a parts store and found the part needed for $40 but was told that it was put on hold from the same place he had came from earlier, so he phoned the second estimate place to cancel and then got a call after fromthe parts store that the part was there.
he was able to get this repalced at canadian tire for a total price of $120......
from $385 to $ 120 is a difference i think
