Cold temperatures...

It's -36 with a -48 wind chill factor today and my 10 year old vehicle started acting up...the temp gauge blinked a few times..then the vehicle backfired a few times!
Like a nasty cough... hee hee.
I pulled over and turned off the engine and then restarted and all seems well. I filled up with fuel and added gas line antifreeze.
Would cold temperatures cause this or is this something else that should be explored by a mechanic?
