overdrive or no overdrive ?

l was wondering,just bought a new ford SUV.after reading the book about the overdrive l am a bit confused.anyone know if you should you have the overdrive switch ON or OFF for reg city driving ? and should it be ON or OFF while driving on the highway ? thanks..
