We have a 3 year old car in pristine condition - always serviced at the dealer - smoke free, pet free, always use synthetic oil, 52,000 km - use winter tires so the all seasons have at least 80% tread remaining.  
 
Get a call from the dealer - they would really like us to trade for a '16 model - there is a $3,000 year-end discount and we qualify for a $2,000 loyalty discount. We have no intention of trading but agree to have a conversation with the dealer - if the deal was too good to pass up then we might trade up.  
 
We did look up the Cdn black book (wholesale) price for our trade - should I expect more than wholesale price for my trade?  
 
Well, we do qualify for the discounts and they offer us about $4,000 less than wholesale for our trade - no point continuing this conversation - they ask us to wait while they "play" with their numbers again - second number is about $1,000 less than wholesale for our trade and to get that price we can't write a cheque - have to sign up for the manufacturer's financing (about 6%) - make biweekly payments for 3 months and then we can pay the balance - of course there are fees (maybe $200) to set up the financing. We left.  
 
The dealer doesn't have the color(s) we want in stock - but dealers in Wpg do have those colors - when we said that I would take the bus to Wpg and bring back the car we wanted - they were 100% opposed to that idea.  
 
Out of curiosity I did send an e-mail to a Vickars dealer in Wpg and they are supposed to be replying tomorrow with their offer.  
 
So, I have 2 questions:  
(1) - Should I expect to get more than wholesale price for my trade considering my trade is in excellent condition?  
 
(2) Have you had any experience dealing with the Vickar group of companies in Wpg?  
 
As I said, we would consider trading if and only if the deal were too good to pass up. We're quite happy to keep driving our current car.

I've never dealt with the Vickars group, but if you've been getting several unfavourable offers from the giant local dealer that I think you're talking about, I'm not surprised.

Like BS to me. They're only concerned about the bottom line that works in their favour, not yours.  
I often get emails and phone calls asking if I would like to trade my 2012 vehicle that I bought new also.  
Personally, the idea of not having car payments after paying off a new car is more appealing than driving a newer body style of the same car I already have.  
I would like to know what life is like wothout car payments. I have been paying off car loans my whole life, due to cars getting written off/stolen.  
Yes, I am aware there will be future repairs to come out of my pocket. But it will be nice to save the $$ I used for car payments to use for such things.

I will not go in to the discussion game playing. maybe I am fool for that but it is such a crock. I avoid and let my husband deal on that sales jargon. he likes it.  
 
you think 4000 less then black book was shocking.  
we had a dealer offer 14,000 for a vehicle that we still owed 26,000. he thought it was a marvelous deal. and this is what really pissed me off... he thought we should jump at his wonderful offer because it was 14,000. I said we can not make a deal like that I owe 26,000. No worries he says you just add that to the loan.  
OH HELL NO! lets just say we did not trade. we had another offer us 20,000 2 days before that.  
I am sorry but there are way more places to deal and cars are made every day.  
 
get the deal you want not the deal they are willing to give you.

A sad fact in today's world is that newer vehicles depreciate faster than what people can pay down their loans on them. Regardless of what you owe on a vehicle is still only worth X amount of dollars. If you have good credit the dealership is more than happy to roll over that extra debt you have on your trade into the new car! Guess what happens 2-3 more years down the road?? $25,000 debt on a car worth $15,000. Pay it off and drive it. No one ever comes ahead trading every 2-3 years..... Well, the dealers do.

I bought my Mitsubishi from Vickars and go there every 5 months for my service as there is no Mitsubishi dealer in Brandon. I was very happy with my salesman and the deal I got (obviously) and have been more than happy with their service department. I have no hesitation in recommending Vickar. They will pressure the same as any other dealership but you are obviously not shy in saying no if you don't like what they offer.

I was reading carefully, and the dealership want you to deal on a '16, with about $5000. worth of inducements. You feel your trade is a quality vehicle worth at least "book" value.  
If it was me, I'd decide whether I really wanted to upgrade my vehicle to a newer model and if the answer is YES, I would sell my current vehicle privately and walk into the dealership of your choice with cash and deal on the '17s and play hardball.

I honesy can't belive that the dealership that has the Second best sales this year and the best dealer satisfaction rating in all of Canada could treat you in a bad Manor. Possibly work with a salesman a tad more. No one is employed there to screw you over. Just know your facts and make a good deal for yourself. And who ever posted to buy a mitsubishi, ugh. Nice you have time to wast a day for any service. I see posts like this all the time here. You know what your vehicle is worth, stick to it. But you started the post by saying you loved your vehicle and didn't need a new one. So don't buy a new one...issues solved.

I simply answered the OP question that I had dealt with Vickar Group and found them great. I always combine my visit to Winnipeg for my service. They even picked me from the airport once after a vacation when I left the car with them to be serviced while we were away.

reality is they phoned you, to try and get you to upgrade and make another sale, they want to get what they want to get out of the sale so either you will lose in trade in, price of the new or financing or a combination of all so they make what they need to make off the sale

...to see if you're the kind of sucker they can take for a ride. in your own car. but you pay for the gas.  
 
It's a suck in, and one of the oldest tricks in the book. Used cars are way more lucrative, but if they can steal your trade, and sell you a new car to boot, even better.

That figure is a guideline.  
 
In the end they need to make some profit on the car they are selling you and the car you are trading in.  
 
They will have costs getting the trade in for resale.m  
 
A safety for one. Possible repairs. Even new wiper blade put on needs costs recovered. Tires looking tired. Yep pun intended.  
 
Detailing/fluids changed. Plus marketing costs.  
 
That black book is there for a reason. They will need to convince the new buyer of all the good you say it has. If you get a premium price they will need it to.  
 
Sometimes it is better to sell privately. You get the better price and a real deal at the dealership.

People are looking for good used low mileage cars like yours. Sell it for higher than black book. Go to your dealer of choice well armed with knowledge and get a great cash deal.

Last year I was told about a car for sale in wpg (as friends had been looking at it but wasn't for them in the end). It was at Winnipeg Dodge (Jeep) at the Auto Mall. I went and looked at vehicle, did everything else by e-mail and was very happy. They didn't agree to my initial deal but in the end I got it. They were exceptional to deal with. More competition in Wpg - prices better and you don't have hassle.

The first three years are the worst for depreciation. You know the trade in offer, it is probably 50 percent or less than what you paid for the vehicle. At 50k your vehicle is barely broken in and will likely last for at least another 3-5 years with little to no problems.  
 
To trade in a vehicle that is in excellent shape that you like and works for you to get a good deal is not a good deal ever.  
 
Of course the dealer wants your trade, they see it maintained and know exactly what they are getting. Might even have a buyer lined up already.  
 
Be happy driving your current car.

Really, when trading a vehicle in to a dealership, it will all be down to the cost to change. If the dealer is selling a car for $20,000 and offers you $15,000 for your trade, the cost to change is $5,000. If you think your car should be worth $17,000, then the dealer may only offer to sell the new car to your for $22,000. The cost to change is still $5,000.00. So really, if you are wanting to trade your car, the question is how much difference do you feel happy in paying, otherwise, sell privately and go in with the cash.

Whereas the local dealer was offering me about $1,000 less the black book (wholesale) price for my trade - the Wpg dealer would offer me the black book price and perhaps a bit more but they really want to see my car before committing to a firm price. And just like the local dealer I would have to use Nissan Finance in order to get the loyalty discount.  
 
After a lot of thought and discussion we've decided to just drive our 3 year old car which we really like and enjoy - great fuel economy and very comfortable.  
I would tend to agree that the better option (at some point in time) would be to sell our car privately.
