I have a 2014 ford f150 and have been towing a small travel trailer just using the side mirrors on the truck. I am getting a trailer a couple feet wider and was wondering if I will need new side view mirrors or who do you call to ask. I have called the insurance people and they say to ask the dealer, and the dealer just says you need to decide for yourself if you need longer side view mirrors. Is there a law stating what you need and where can you find this info...?

If you want to see what's happening around you while your driving, I would suggest getting tow mirrors. I could be wrong, but I doubt there is a law stating what you should have. Down side, the tow mirrors are really expensive.

is much easier to drive-especially in heavy traffic-if you have towing mirrors. Changing lanes can be very tricky if you cannot see past the trailer. I do not know what the law says but i think you will dind ypu appreciate having better rear view.

For your truck you can get ones that just slide over your current side mirrors. Work great. Not a lot of money. Work great. I have a set.

You should always be able to see all the way down the side to the back corner of the trailer. If not... That's a blind spot. A shoulder check won't help with a travel trailer. When changing lanes or backing up, it is imperative to be able to see the entire trailer and it's surroundings. I have the Ford 4X4 crew and a 28' travel trailer, so I can relate. If you can't see... the mirrors need to be further out. Plain and simple. You got to be able to see. Anything else will only put you and others at risk.

When you’re not towing your trailer, remove any  
mirrors you’ve added to your towing vehicle.

Do not need to buy at dealership. Canadian tire sells, princess auto has too and we got them there on a pretty good sale last summer. Maybe even Amazon sells.

We tow our travel trailer with a Pathfinder and I bought tow mirrors that clip on to my existing mirrors. They make a huge difference and given much better visibility. I wouldn't tow without them.  
 
Be choosy though. I bought some universal clip-on tow mirrors from Canadian Tire that were garbage as they wouldn't stay put. I don't even see them on Canadian Tire's website anymore so maybe they no longer carry them.  
 
Get something that clips on to the car mirror and securely ratchets. Otherwise, you will be forever adjusting them.
