SilentObserver said "This is poor, outdated advice. There may be exceptions, but most businesses, especially corporations/chains, use recruiting teams and websites to go through resumes and cover letters.
Most places will turn you away if you come in with a resume in person and ask you to apply online instead.
Do your research, don't apply for jobs you're not qualified and don't expect $30 an hour for an unskilled, entry level role. "
maybe outdated in certain situations. I owned my own business for a period of time with 5 employees. I did not have time to reply to all applicants, the only ones that I replied to where ones who could possibly fit the job, but there were better applicants applying. The ones that where just applying for numbers to be able to say they applied and where in no way even remotely qualified hit the trash/deleted, because I did not have time for silliness.
I then managed a shop with 12 employees. The same proceedure was followed.
In both cases if someone came in the door looking for a job and looked like they were ready to go to work I would make time to at least have a quick chat with them, even if it meant having them come back at a later date for a complete interview. At that time they had some investment in the game. When firing off random applications thru the internet you have no real investment.
Don't forget when applying for a job you are selling your time, and or muscle, and or knowledge and or skill. The employer does not have to buy if what you are selling does not meet their needs and they have no obligation to you.
I agree that this may not be the way all companys hire, but the ones I have been involved in walk ins had an advantage. Most small companies do not have hr deptments, so the person that hires you may be the person who is your boss.
Part of the problem with these kind of posts is the orignal posters are trying to blame someone else for not hiring them. They never give any indication the kind of work they are looking for, what their qualifications are etc. They are upset that someone will not take time to pay attention to them. Sorry that is not the way it works except in the movies.
Just incase you think I am against internet applications, I am not. But you need to make sure that your application matches or come close to the requirements of the help wanted ad. No sense applying for an journeyman electricians job if you have a degree in child care or basket weaving with no training or experience in electrial. Make sure your application shows how you can do the job. Do not lie, a good interviewer will pick that up fast and you will be asked to leave.
