Looks like 18th street Northbound merging confrontations are going to be a thing of the past..... As per the link below, an announcement is expected later today of the commitment of Federal and Provincial dollars towards a new 4-lane bridge being built in place of the current Daly Overpass on 18th street.

This of course isnt the only new bridge project upcoming for Brandon. As per Sun reporter Charles Tweed (see below), construction of the new 1st street bridge is expected to take place first with the Daly to being undertaken afterwards.  
 

First Street bridge is still priority. Province could start this fall. When complete, Daly Overpass replacement will begin. #bdnmb

Will be interesting to see how traffic to the North Hill is handled during construction of each, but assuming that it'll be a case of "short term pain for long term gain." More info is expected later today.

Is there an election coming perhaps?

I'm for this entirely however... I think we need a dedicated secondary route to the north hill other than 18th St. for the duration of 1st St. being closed and vice versa. Especially now since 8th St. is pooched.  
By dedicated I mean I know we can take 26th and then down past Andrews Field, but that route can't handle the added traffic flow either.  
This isn't a comfort thing either, there's a lot of people who live and work that depend on being able to get back and forth across the river not to mention firehall being there as well.

needs to look long and hard at replacing the 8th. street bridge. IMO it would be risky and foolhardy not to have that bridge available.

Before everyone jumps.... I am joking and I understand the costs but I would put it on my wish list for the future.

The current NDP government is at it's best, luring voters. Brandon is maybe an afterthought with Greg Selinger. NDP is bankrupting this Province.

1st street bridge will be changed to one north bound and one south bound lane to accommodate construction of the first of two bridges. So there will still be access throughout construction  
 

We could get new elementary schools built with an announcement that fast! Like the one desperately needed in the South End that has already been confirmed for 9th and Maryland but no confirmation or start date?!

Personally, I would skip 34th Street and instead make 50th Street the next major north/south thoroughfare, right through from Grand Valley Road to Patricia Avenue. I don't mean right away, but they should plan for it. It will only be a few more years before Brandon has spread that far west anyway.

I'm glad government has committed to the new Daly Overpass.

I am with you Triple. Even if they did start it now(yeah I know it won't happen) it would help with highway traffic too.

But how sad is it for a city our size to where we need all three major bridges replaced, fixed, or expanded. Someone was blind in the planning department. I am just glad they finally are doing something.

The reason is that both provincial and federal governments are broke and can't figure out how they will pay for it.  
 
It is interesting how the bridge has been talked about for years and no commitment from anyone. That is with the except of our past mayor willing to throw the cities money at a bridge that the city didn't have any ownership of. The timing is very interesting.

60 million and that's for one bridge. Oy!
