Melita

what is happening at Melita? Since Melita will get it before Souris and Wawanesa it would be nice to hear when it is coming.

Melita

The peak at Melita is expected to July 5-9 where flows are predicted to be 31,000-33,000 cfs (previous April peak flows were 16,800 so it's going to be moving unbelievably fast)

Normal river level is 1397.7 ft
Yesterday it was at 1411.48
Forecasted peak is expected to be 1413.75-1414.5, so as much as a 3 ft rise is still to come

I hope that helps. If I notice anything different in today's flood bulletin, I'll post. you can also check out http://gov.mb.ca/flooding for daily bulletins

pretty sad

pretty sad when they have to pay people to help their neighbors. Where is the army when we need them ? sigh. All I can do is wish them luck and send up a prayer for them,

$15/hr NOT TRUE

I just called the Town of Melita offices and they are NOT paying or sanbaggers, they are calling for Volunteers.

Paying

I just called the town office and have confirmed that they are definitely paying $15/hour for sandbagging help (well EMO is paying). They have another 4000-5000 sandbags to fill and will be needing all of the help they can get. Could be a great opportunity for someone that is looking to help out and make a little money in the process.
It sounds like they need as many people as they can get, but if you're reading this message more than an hour or two after I've posted it it wouldn't hurt to call the town office at 522-3413 before you make the drive.

When you get there, you'll just have to sign in (and later sign out) through the town office. To get there, start by heading to the banana (can't miss it). Then head West on main street and the office is almost at the top of the hill by RBC.

Wrong Phone Number

523-3413 is not from Melita, it's from Killarney. If you are wanting the Town Office in Melita it is 522-3413.

Pre-evacuation info...

The town went around last night with Pre-evacuation information. And we had to fill out a paper saying our address, phone numbers, and who lived in the house. Everyone is supposed to be ready to leave because we will be given very limited amount of time to evacuate.

Sandbagging

EMO is paying $15 an hour in Melita for sangbaggers. I don't know if they still are as they are pretty much done the sandbagging here now, but Saturday and Sunday I know for a fact they were, signs up in town advertising it.

Thank you, you're right... 522-3413 is the Melita town office. I've corrected the initial post

I was told this morning by the town office that there will be 4000-5000 more sandbags in need of filling...

If you

are coming in from the west, east or south (or if you don't know where the town office is)you can actually just go to the White Owl Gas station on the corner of #83 & #3 and sign in at the HSE Medical truck (can't miss it) in the west corner of the parking lot.
HSE has all your safety equipment that you will need for working (hard hats, vests). So even if you go sign in at the town you will then have to go to the HSE truck to pick up your gear.
They are supplying drinks and supper.
And on a side note about the $15.00 you do not have to take the pay IF you don't want too. But unfortunatly due to people helping in other areas too it is easier to help in the town that is 15 minutes away from your home then to drive an hour. Souris and Wawanesa is hit a lot harder then Melita is (right now) so people stop there first (understandably) so before people pick at Melita for paying $15.00 and whatever else sometimes thats the only way to get people to help out and we are also smaller population wise then souris and further away from a major center so we are left out to hang. But with a lot of people refusing the $15.00 or donating it back to the local fire department, pool, or other centers/groups we are getting help and support.

PLEASE *UPDATE* us Melita R U OK?

We have heard lots of rumors in Souris, but no facts, how is Melita doing? I know the water is coming up and rushing past you probably like crazy. But I have seen little to no updates from people of Melita.

Could we have an update, it'd be nice to know your all okay down there.

Melita

is doing good. All the sand bags are up (to my knowledge) and hwy #3 is closed as water as of yesterday was upwards of 1' on the yellow line in a few spots. South down at Coulter their hwy has been closed (hwy #251). Right now the biggest concern (my opinion) is fire & ems. The people 1 mile east and beyond of town will be waiting on either Deloraine or Waskada to respond (for fire). ARHA has placed ambulances around the areas blocked off by the water.
Other then that it is now a waiting game. Hoping the Banana will keep us safe!

heard that

I heard that the dyke around the water plant right now is a lot lower than the main dyke. Perhaps they are planning to increase the height of the water plant dyke over the next few days.

If the main dyke has any troubles the water plant could be at a serious risk?

I believe (someone with more knowledge would be better) but the lagoons and a lift station are the the only things that could be in danger (other then some businesses). The water plant is at the top of the hill just as you are coming in from the north.
The lift station had its dyke tore down and rebuilt to a proper hieght now and was given a lot of care and concern. It was built oilfield tough so it should stand the test of time.

right.

then clearly I pay for my own pay check. I see that all the sandbagging we did earlier this summer has already been forgotten about and we still owe you the world. My bad, we will get right on it.

Lets not

turn this thread into a fight! It would have been nice to get any vollies out, not just the army. All the help was appreciated but when they had to offer $15.00 an hour there were sure a lot of "vollies" that came out of the woodwork.
There were some amazing people that came out, like a (guessing age) 60+ man from Brandon, a couple that had time off from Minnedosa, 3 crews from a lawn sprinkler company from Brandon (wish I could remember the name) and some teenagers from Virden & Cromer area, plus some from surrounding areas. Every town in trouble could use more vollies, but with the amount we had we gotter done. Highways, Town workers, locals, business owners, residents and visitors banned together and got it done just in time. Its just to bad that we had to cancel the Canada Day celebrations, would have been a few minutes to say thanks and relax and enjoy some beautiful fireworks. Guess we will just have to wait for Banana Days.

$15 a hour

Everyone seems bothered by this. But I know for a fact that there were a bunch of guys from Melita that have been put out of work by this flooding that used it as a chance to earn a bit of cash to carry them through. Plus business is way down all over town and it can not have hurt to have had non locals in town with cash in hand buying gas, food and what ever else (i know a lot was provided)

Don't blame the army gnome! The boys have been on standby for months. Not the military's fault that they weren't requested earlier. How about a little gratitude for what the army has done!

Once again

this thread was started to be an update for Melita! There was a need to know from someone concerned about how it is down there as all you see is Minot, Souris and Wawanesa.
So lets leave the bitching about the freakin army and anything else out of it! If you want to promote the army and all they do start another post. This is about the flood that is hitting Melita hard in the next day or 2. Unless you got something of interest to add stop trolling around trying to start a fight.

I was wondering what has happened down on machinery row and also was curious what sort of a rise there has been today.
