Historical Brandonites: Beatrice Brigden
5/12/2007 at 9:50 AM
One of the quiz answers was that the first woman to run in the federal riding of Brandon was Beatrice Brigden in 1930. I thought that was interesting considering the role of women in rural society at the time (a significant portion of the Brandon riding was rural at the time).
It turns out that she was a very interesting woman and there is a lot of information about her on the net: a social activist; labour leader and teacher of special needs kids. She played an important role in the Winnipeg General Strike, the Brandon Sympathetic Strike, the suffragette movement and the creation of the CCF.
I put together a write up on her that will follow and posted a couple of pics in the photo section.
