Forget Belize, escape to Calgary and gain 31 degrees!

Posted by Adam in Local Weather, 1/30/2019

Temperature in Brandon at wakeup: -41
Forecast high in Calgary today: 44 degrees higher than that!

As you power through the coldest morning of the year this morning, in case you needed a reminder that Mother Nature works in mysterious ways look no further than the temperature spread between Brandon this morning and what our friends in Calgary will see by this afternoon. While we are expected see temps rise in the afternoon to -28, Cowtown is forecast to be +3

Realistically if you fly last minute it isn’t going to be pretty on the wallet with a seat on this afternoon’s flight to YYC costing $361 without getting into the return flight. If car is your preferred mode of transportation and you left right now you could average a gain of somewhere between 4 and 5 “feels like” degrees for every hour you drive.

A good visual of the “polar vortex” and its effect on North American temperatures can be seen on the map below:

Just be sure in your magnificent cold dodging adventure that you’re home real soon since on Friday the two cities are forecast to have near identical highs (-9 vs -8) and then by Sunday the tables are expected to have turned and Brandon actually predicted to be 7 degrees warmer than Calgary’s -20 ;)

In all seriousness, please be safe out there folks. Please review the Extreme Cold Warning in place for the area and for more information on cold weather and your health please review this information put out by the Province.
