Wheat Kings' Mattheos to take next step after signing with Carolina

Posted by Adam in Local Sports, 3/21/2019

Though the season is now over for the Wheat Kings, there’s more hockey to be played for their 2018-19 leading scorer.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they have signed Stelio Mattheos to a three year entry level contract that begins next season. Until then the Winnipeg native will report to Carolina’s American Hockey League affiliate in Charlotte to cut his teeth at the pro game over the remainder of this season. Charlotte currently owns the best record in the AHL with 92 points in 65 games

The Wheat Kings wasted no time in congratulating their former captain on taking the next step:

Mattheos, who as the 1st overall pick in the 2014 bantam draft was the Wheat Kings’ highest ever draft choice, scored 44 goals and 96 points this past season in Brandon. He was a member of the club's 2016 WHL Championship team and by the look of things may get a chance for playoff experience at the next level sooner rather than later!
