Brayden Schenn would have to be considered one of the most memorable Wheat Kings we’ve had play in this city. You could start with the excitement around one of the best seasons ever put up by a 16 year old rookie (71 points), then everything surrounding the NHL draft the following year when the Saskatoon native was chosen 5th overall by the Los Angeles Kings. Then of course the pivotal role he played for the 2010 Memorial Cup runner up.
Schenn’s time in Brandon will also be remembered for the four draft picks and two players that then-GM Kelly McCrimmon acquired in exchange for him in a January 2011 trade that would pave the way for the WKs’ WHL championship five years later.
Now in St.Louis in his eighth season as a pro, via the link below Schenn is being speculatively linked by hockey insider Elliott Friedman to McCrimmon’s current team in possible trade interest of a different kind. In what was called an “educated guess,” Friedman talked on Friday in a tv appearance about the possibility of the Vegas Golden Knights (for whom McCrimmon is of course assistant General Manager) having an interest in acquiring #10.
Anyone that follows pro hockey knows that trade speculation is quite frequent and more often than not it’s simply rumours that amount to giving folks like us something to talk about... but it would be hard to argue from a Westman hockey fan standpoint against it being a fun tought to see Schenn join McCrimmon and all of the other Wheat King-connected staff and players in Vegas!
