Welcome to the -40 deep freeze...

Posted by Adam in Local Weather, 12/28/2018

.... and the roller coaster that is the Manitoba winter! It wasn’t much more than a week ago that we had to be concerned about whether it would be cold enough for skating ice. This morning marks our first brush with -40 windchills, with Environment Canada having in place an Extreme Cold Warning for Brandon and area.

For comparison, the coldest the temperature got on December 19 was just -3.8 degrees. This morning even without factoring the windchill in we’re looking at more than a 25 degree swing to the negative from that morning just nine days later.

We can expect below-average cold throughout the day today but from the forecast it looks like said rollercoaster will swing back the other way by the end of the weekend with Sunday’s high said to be -5.

The full text of the Extreme Cold Warning is at:

https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/report_e.html?mb7#1437358151140219489201812280501ww1171cwwg

10:50am update: At -28 with a -35 windchill temps have climbed just enough to be better than warning-level, meaning the Extreme Cold Warning has been ended. The forecast has today's high eventually expected to be -18 with a windchill of -25.
