Less than four months after winning the Stanley Cup as a member of the St. Louis Blues, Brandon’s Joel Edmundson has been involved in a significant NHL trade announced today.
The Blues have traded Edmundson as well as forward prospect Dominik Bokk and a 7th round draft selection to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for all-star defenceman Justin Faulk and a 5th round draft selection.
The former 2nd round Blues draft choice recently had his name etched on the Stanley Cup. In July a viewing party was held at the Keystone Centre where the trophy was shared with a large crowd of local fans.
Edmundson had been awarded a 1-year 3.1M contract with the Blues after an arbitration process earlier this summer and is to become an unrestricted free agent following this season. On the Hurricanes he joins Brandon-born forward Jordan Martinook. Edmundson's former Brandon AAA U18 Wheat King teammate Michael Ferland had also been a member of the Hurricanes this past season prior to an off-season free agent signing with Vancouver.
The Hurricanes open the upcoming season on October 3rd against the Montreal Canadiens. Their schedule includes a December 17th visit to Winnipeg to play the Jets.
In 269 NHL games with the Blues Edmundson netted 13 goals and 52 points including 2 goals and 9 points in last year’s eventual championship season.
