Samuel Wetstein’s marker in the 89th minute served as the game winning goal on Sunday as the Brandon University Bobcats Men’s Soccer team topped the host Providence University College Pilots by a 3-2 score to claim the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) Championship.
The title was the first ever for the men’s program, which had joined the MCAC in 2014-15 after forming as a club team in 2013-14.
Brandon, which also had goals from Travis Buick and Kevin Lopez, had entered the tournament as the top seed after finishing atop the season’s standings with an 8-1-1 record. Buick for his efforts was named tourney MVP.
The Women’s Soccer program, with titles in 2016 and 2017 to its credit, came up just short this year in falling to the eventual champion USB Rouges in Saturday’s semi-final.
The MCAC recently joined the Canadian Colleges Athletic Conference on a probationary status, paving the way for future MCAC champions to compete one step further for a National championship in future years.
