Heat Warning issued amid near-record-breaking forecast temps

Posted by Adam in Local Weather, 8/18/2020

With the region in the midst of one of the hottest stretches of weather of the year, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Heat Warning for a large portion of Southern Manitoba including Brandon on Tuesday afternoon.

According to text of the warning issued by the weather service, an upper ridge of high pressure building Eastward from Saskatchewan will bring well-above-normal temperatures in the days ahead that will exceed warning criteria.

At the time of this posting, ECCC data was showing rising Brandon temperatures throughout Tuesday to have reached 30.4 degrees as of 4pm marking the first time in August that the city had seen 30 degree heat.

Wednesday’s forecasted high calls for a peak of 34 degrees, which would challenge June 27th’s 34.4 degrees for hottest day of 2020. The record for August 19th based on data from 1941-2012 is 35.2 degrees, set in 1986.

Further above-normal heat is expected on Thursday with a high of 32 called for as of the time of this posting. Just as notable over the period are overnight lows, which are expected to only dip to 16 degrees on each of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

As a result of the heat, people are asked to watch for signs of heat illness that could include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. People and pets should not be left in vehicles and outdoor workers should take scheduled breaks.

A slight moderation is expected for the weekend to still-above-average temperatures through the weekend.

Similar warnings were also in place for Southern Saskatchewan and Alberta with temperatures at Regina and Calgary showing as 35 and 33 degrees respectively as of the time of this post.
