Concrete Testing Technician
Job Summary
The Concrete Testing Technician is responsible for sampling, testing, and inspecting freshly mixed and hardened concrete. You will work closely with engineers and contractors to ensure all materials comply with project specifications and industry regulations (such as ACI, ASTM, or CSA standards).
Essential Responsibilities
- Field Testing: Perform standardized tests on fresh concrete at construction sites, including slump, air content, unit weight, and temperature.
- Sample Collection: Collect representative samples and cast specimens (cylinders or beams) for later laboratory strength testing.
- Laboratory Analysis: Conduct compressive and flexural strength tests on hardened concrete specimens to verify load-bearing capabilities.
- Site Inspection: Monitor concrete pours to ensure proper placement, consolidation, and curing techniques are followed.
- Data & Reporting: Maintain accurate, legible records of all test data and prepare detailed daily field reports for project stakeholders.
- Equipment Care: Clean, maintain, and calibrate specialized testing tools (e.g., pressure meters, scales, compression machines) to ensure ongoing accuracy. Kaplan Community Career Center
Key Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; a diploma or degree in Civil Engineering is preferred
- Certifications: Must hold or be able to obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician ? Grade I certification.
- Skills:
- Detail-Oriented: High precision in following ASTM/CSA testing protocols and documenting results.
- Communication: Ability to professionally liaise with site supervisors, engineers, and clients.
- Analytical Thinking: Capability to troubleshoot mix-design issues or non-conformance in real-time.
Physical Requirements & Environment
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift and move heavy objects (e.g., 50+ lb concrete samples) throughout the day.
- Outdoor Work: Willingness to work in varying weather conditions and on active, fast-paced construction sites.
- Mobility: Candidate must posess a valid Class 5 drivers license and be available to work unusual hours. Some out of town work will be required.
