I am looking to purchase cameras for security reasons to place outside my home due to the recent increase in crime in my area. I was seeking to find something wireless and possibly solar powered or battery powered.

Looking for recommendations on good products that stand up to our Canadian weather and provide good quality usage. Seems like most I look at cant handle much cold or there are complaints about quality and lagging.

Haven’t tried anything solar or battery powered but one of their cameras is what you see in the webcam shot on the weather page.
Well priced, don’t force you to pay any kind of monthly fee, easy setup, easy use with app. Year and a half in and still handling the highest highs and lowest lows our weather’s thrown at it with the model we got. Depending on the model you can either get one that records to a unit in your house, or some let you pop in a memory card and they just record to it.

I bought two of these recently and they are great cameras. They use either WIFI or wired network and run on 12 volts. They can be POE but come with power supplies. I have no experience with solar or battery operated cameras but these are fantastic and very affordable. They do have a cloud option and alerts to your phone but I connect mine to a server running Blue Iris camera monitoring software which is excellent. These cameras are outdoor rated and have a wide field of view and excellent resolution. They are a bit tricky to set up but once set up work great. I bought mine on Amazon.com as the price was better, even with exchange, and I have Prime shipping.

I suggest you look at iSmart alarm systems online. Their cameras are great. The top model plans and zooms with a speaker and microphone all managed by an app on your phone.

Do cameras really do much good these days. Seems all you get is a grainy picture of who ever broke. Do the police actually catch anyone from these videos? Just asking.

We use nest cams, I have 3, the picture is 4K quality. The only downfall has been crappy wifi from MTS. Other than that it's been an excellent purchase. They stand up well in cold weather with no issues

you'd be surprised how good the 3-5MP images are on the $100-200 cameras during the day and even during the night. I'm sure other manufacturers have similar images, but at this link there's a comparison of what the 4MP image of a $100 camera can capture compared to cameras from a few years ago:

Can't speak for Police or courts but would be surprised if there aren't a lot more suspects identified with these types of cameras now that they're so cheap and so easy to setup. Good example is what took place in Onanole, where it sounds like a private surveillance camera played a big part in Police response to what took place.

Couple of things to think about with security. POE (power over ethernet) cameras will ultimately be more reliable as either of the two other options, will likely suffer from battery failure when temperatures get way down. POE although a cabled system will not suffer this . Similarly Solar powered units charge a battery, which means unless the battery pack is mounted inside, will have the same problem. Also it's worth spending extra on adding extra security lights to ward off unwanted visitors
