Toshiba Laptop Question

I've had my laptop for some time now and I was wondering how you would i guess "upload" dvd's onto it. I can play my movies but am unable to find away to keep them on my hard drive. I want to create AMV's but so far i cant seeing i have no videos to work with. Can someone tell me how to do that? (Note I'm rather technology deprived so i dont know if im using proper terms for things)
