I just bought a new tablet. Not a techy person (at all), but felt like $10 per month for two years was alot for insurance/virus protection. Or am I mistaken?  
I got the tablet on sale for $299 and paying $10/month more or less pays for a new one again. I'm hoping there's a cheaper way to protect the device as I am confident in my being careful with it and not needing damage warranty.  
Where is the most affordable place for quality and care in getting necessary updates/protection for a Tablet?

I'm not sure why you are paying monthly for virus protection. AVG offers a free virus protection application. Just go to their site, download and install on your tablet.  
 
Any updates to your tablet's OS will be automatic, and from the makers of the tablet (Apple, Google, Micrsoft, etc.) You get a notice on your tablet when an update is available. Shouldn't be paying for that.  
 
Updates to the various applications (programs) you have on your tablet can be controlled by you - just set your preferences as to how you'd like to handle it when an update becomes available.

Is no good don't do it. I switched to if from my paid anti virus and ended up with more viruses and issues because it doesn't cover everything and has no fire wall. And also don't use Norton.  

ClamWin is a free open source virus protection solution that I run on my computers. The only drawback is that I get quite a few false positives and it does involve a wee bit of technical know-how.  
 
AVG is fine but you get lots of prompts to upgrade.  
 
No virus scanner is perfect. We run an enterprise level version of BitDefender at our office and even then, we've had viruses get through. The key is keeping the virus definitions up to date.  
 

I have customers where I work ask me this all the time  
 
"Whats the best A/V software"  
 
My answer every single time is.  
 
IF you get the flu shot, can you get the flu?  
IF you lock your car door, will that prevent me from breaking into it?  
IF you lock your house door, will that prevent me from breaking into it?  
 
No matter what 'protection' you use nothing will guarantee you safety.  
 
I would much rather teach people how to avoid the viruses all togeather by getting into good habbits like not downloading a zip file, not clicking links in emails ect... personally I tend to recommend Avira for Windows, MyLookout for Android and iOS

My goodness just buy an IPAD!
