Need Quilting Advice

Christmas is gonna be super tight this year, so I have decided to make a bunch of my kids presents. I have a bunch of old clothes we were gong to give away, and I thought I could use some of them to make patchwork quilts. Any advice on making a patchwork quilt? I have the general idea, and I am good at sewing, but advice would be appreciated.
